Notes for ALEXANDER LsDnrw:
His parents were from Cupids, Newfoundland. He quit the Orange Order because they decided to allow card
playing. He was a skilled cabinet maker. He moved to Monfeal from Cupids. He died tragically in 1931
drowning in a shallow stream after suffering an attack of appendicitis.

He left a story about an old deaf fisherman who met another man on the beach.

"It tundered hard last night?"
"You lost your punt?"
"No, it tundered hard last night!"
"Broke up I spose."

Alexander was a member of the Salvation Armyfunited.

NOTES fOT ALBERT JAMES BEATTY LEDREW:
He lost his father at l2 when his father, Alexander, drowned in a shallow stream during an appendicitis
attack. His mother Emma Jane took him and his twin, Harold, to Big Lorraine, Cape Breton Island, Nova
Scotia to live with her brother, Al Bussey. He grew up during the 30's fishing for swordfish and farming.
Albert also had a small store, so they led a simple life, but were well off compared to most.

He joined the Army in 1939. He was a tankman in the Grenedier Guards. He was a cartoonist for the
Regiment paper. He saw heavy action through Holland and on to Germany.

Soon after the war, the jobs dried up, and he moved with Harold and sister-in-law, Celia to Montreal, and
then on to Uxbridge Ontario. He worked as a house painter, candy maker, and tanner until he was hired by
the main Post Office in Toronto in 1954.

He was an avid painter, and reader, and retired in 1985. He lived with a companion, Judy, who was a former
dancer. He suffered a brain hemorrage while they were on vacation in Mexico. He was held hostage in the
Mexican hospital until $50,000 was paid. He was flown back to Toronto, but it was too late and he died.

Notes for T HAROLD JOHN DOUGLAS LEDREW:
Harold was the identical twin of Albert James. He had a serious childhood illness at the age of I I . A kicked shin led to osteomyelitis. He was treated with maggots and was the first person in Canada to have a bone graft.A piece of sheep's bone was grafted into his shin.

He  lost his father at the age of 12 when his father, Alexander, drowned in a shallorry stream during an appendicitis attack. His mother Emma Jane took him and his twin brother, Bert, to Big Lorraine, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia to live with her brother, Al Bussey. He was known to play ice floe tag on crutches.

He grew up during the 30's fishing for swordfish and farming. His Uncle Al also had a small store so they led a hard, simple life, but were well off compared to most. He married Celia Shaw from nearby Louisbourg in 1940,and moved back to Montreal to work at the CIL plant. He wis refused military service beiause of his ieg. His son Gary was born n 1942. They moved to Louisbourg, Nova Scotia in 1943, and he worked as a marine machinist. His daughte, Gaille, was born n 1943 . He also took a job as a lighthouse keeper on the Louisbourg
Lighthouse.

Soon after the war the jobs dried up, and he and Celia moved to Monteal, then left Gary and Gaille with relatives
while they moved to Uxbridge, Ontario. He worked as a house painter, candy maker, and tanner, until he was

He was an avid painter and reader, and retired in 1983. He was a well known sight in Uxbridge walking his 3 dogs. He enjoyed woodworking, his favorite song was "Bojangles", his favorite author was Mark Twain, and favorite artist was David Milne.

He died in 1995 after a long illness resulting from a brain hemorrage and a stroke.
